Text “A curtain of laundry flapping on the line, light as air, was the only thing moving.” Delta Wedding (1946) by Eudora Welty.

Welty (Jackson, Mississippi, 1909–2001) is one of the most celebrated voices of 20th-century American literature. Her work is known for its lyrical attention to everyday life, the sensory details of domestic spaces, and the deep emotional undercurrents in seemingly ordinary moments.

In Delta Wedding, she paints an intimate portrait of a Southern family preparing for a wedding in the 1920s. The narrative unfolds through subtle gestures, shifting points of view, and a strong sense of place — particularly the family home and its surrounding garden. The quoted passage evokes the stillness, heat, and softness of daily rituals, perfectly echoing the atmosphere we aim to recreate in Let It Hang.

Our booth recreates a sun-drenched backyard in the heart of a hot spring or summer day; a quiet, lived-in garden space where clothes are hung out to dry. We want you to smell freshly cut grass, hear the relentless song of cicadas, and feel the warmth of the sun as it dries fabric and skin alike.

This space is a pause. A place of no obligations, no urgency, no performance. It’s a setting for shedding layers, airing out thoughts and feelings, and simply being. A personal moment suspended in time where artworks, like garments, are exposed to the sun, to bugs, to breeze; to the elements of life and nature. Through this installation, the participating artists explore themes of vulnerability, intimacy, memory, and seasonal rhythm.

Fátima de Juan (Palma de Mallorca, Spain, 1984) brings a vibrant and emotional palette rooted in personal storytelling and childhood memories, often expressed through symbols of play, femininity, and heat.

Grip Face (Palma de Mallorca, Spain, 1986) uses the visual language of urban signage, ephemeral graphics, and everyday decay to reflect on contemporary identity and the tension between private and public space; a key subtext of the backyard.

Fausto Amundarain (Caracas, Venezuela, 1992) contributes with his layered, fragmented visual vocabulary that speaks of cultural noise, saturation, and displacement; evoking what happens when the private meets the external world.

An Wei (Madrid, Spain, 1987) presents work that is both graphic and poetic, often rooted in gesture and repetition, echoing the quiet ritual of domestic actions like hanging clothes, folding, or waiting.

Each artist, through their distinct visual language, contributes to the construction of this sensory and conceptual landscape; one that invites the audience to reconnect with the slowness and softness of simply existing.
