RIDE OR DIE - SOLO SHOW

Sophie Vallance

Dates
25/03/2023 – 01/06/2023

Text
Ride or Die is a solo exhibition by Scottish artist Sophie Vallance Cantor in which contrasting emotions and life experiences take center stage, transforming into a metaphor for the healing process. Referencing the phrases "Ride it out" and "Dye trying," the artist reflects the duality inherent in healing. The self-portraits constantly shift and evolve, living on the canvases, juxtaposing scenes that evoke courage and strength with others that suggest feelings of sadness or introspection.

Thus, we find everything from a fierce motorcycle rider traversing the neon-lit streets of New York to a pensive smoker contemplating the emptiness of her solitary room. Or gentle domestic cats transformed into wild felines, embodying the emotions that overwhelm her mind, while simultaneously symbolizing the unconditional support so necessary in this process. Atmospheric and evocative scenes that can be understood as disordered frames from the same film, where the neon lights, sunsets, and shadows cast by dense vegetation become a metaphor for self-illumination and reflection.

A distant journey in which the viewer can observe, in the third person, the overwhelming and disconcerting emotions experienced by our protagonist, without being able to establish a linear progression.
